Rebellious Jukebox Vol.2

Well, here we are again with another instalment.
So far we've posted 199 tracks, not counting the occasional stealthed ones in the title or comments, and I don't know about you but I've had a blast doing this, and long may it continue I say...
Not only do I think we've posted some great tracks but now we have the added bonus features of SVC Radio and SVC TV, who knows what the future has in store for us...?

As with the last Rebellious Jukebox I'll upload any tracks that you might have missed over the last couple of months, first come first served though i'm afraid, you can either request in the comments or just drop me a line via the wonder of email (found at the bottom of my sidebar).
And please don't forget to find the original post for the tracks and visit any links there might be...

SVC-200 ~ Low - Fearless (Peel Session)

I had plans for another track for the 200th post up until yesterday when the very sad news of John Peel's death changed everything.
So in tribute here's one of my favourite Peel moments out of the dozens and dozens...
well actually hundreds let's face it.
It's the sublime Low doing a version of Pink Floyd's Fearless.
I'm not 100% sure but I guess Low decided to do this for Mr.Peel as the original Floyd version had You'll Never Walk Alone (which was John's beloved Liverpool FC's anthem) sung by the fans at Anfield towards the end of the song....
Low don't do it here sadly, would have made it an almost perfect Peel moment...
It is a beautiful version though.
Quite a fitting tribute I hope.

I also thought it might be quite interesting to check on the most popular downloads over the last few of months since I started...
A couple of suprises in there...
The main one being that there's something I did at number 1...
I swear it's not a fix...
Honest.

Bad News Guys.....

John Peel has died....
He had a massive heart attack while on a working holiday in Peru with his wife Sheila...

I'm absolutely gutted!!!

Today we lost without doubt the most influential and respected person in radio ever..
I'd even go as far as to say in Music in general too.

Without him generation upon generation of free thinking music fans would never have had access to so much quality music by some of today's most respected bands....

Without him some of my favourite bands would never have had released much more than an obscure 7"....

He will be sorely missed by everybody who has ever loved music.

Without him my life would have been completely different...

John Robert Parker Ravenscroft 1939-2004
RIP.

New Kids On The Bloc

Frenz (sic) Ferdinand have truly special hair and a whole heap of influence and nous to boot so when they were sent a demo tape by young post-punkers Bloc Party it was only a matter of time until it got to all the right ears. Domino/Wichita/Moshi Moshi/Trash Aesthetic/Dim Mak to be exact. Two releases in 'She's Hearing Voices' and 'Banquet' and we're now at the giddy pre debut album stage where it all gets very exciting with fawning press, loads of fabulous gigs and thank the Lord songs to back up all the hyperbole.

For those that have not yet heard this Sonic Youth meets Joy Division meets Gang of Four Bloc Party stew and are perhaps a little apprehensive about the 'next big thing' tag, may I suggest you download these tracks and get your big asses up on the bandwagon. I did, it was a mind-scramble (Thanks Weird Science).

New single 'Helicopter' came out yesterday on Wichita and the CD contains the now infamous Minotaur Shock (SVC great mate) version which has been going on eBay for 35 quid. Only 100 copies originally pressed. Madness! If you just want the remix then click over to War Child, pay a quid and download the mp3 all from the comfort of your own home. It's an agoraphobics paradise this internet lark... For those that still have the use of their legs then pop along to Woolies and get the 'real thing'. Who said Top 20?

Bloc Party - She's Hearing Voices
From the 'Bloc Party' EP. June 2004 (Wichita) 21.07.04 (V2 Japan) 14.09.04 (Dim Mak)

Bloc Party - Banquet
From the 'Banquet' single. Moshi Moshi 03.05.04 ltd to 500 7"

The Listening Goat

Well, for the last 5 months or so there has been only two of us....
Now there are three... Yay!
I'm sure you'll all help me and Rowche welcome SVC's newest member...
The Listening Goat
Take it away sir...

The Fall - The Aphid
The Listening Goat Bank is the London branch of a band I was(n't) in which
which used to turn up outside Ah-ha gigs in Liverpool and shout Ah-Ha lyrics
at the punters waiting to go in.
So bored at work I've been glazing over to a useless auto - didactic/robotic conceit of making the hours un-wasted by listening to streamed random gibberish on Radio 4 mixed with rediscovering the best band in the world: The Fall.
I'm lost in music! caught in a trap-ah!

I've been listening to this a lot lately sometimes with Melvyn Blag whining
over the top...

Sheffield Sex City (Part 3)

This is the the final part to the SVC Sheffield Sex City trilogy and to round up I thought I'd post a few oddities along with an old family favourite.

All Seeing I - 1st Man In Space
So 'Golden Oldie' first and here's Sheffield's very own supergroup The All Seeing I and 'The First Man In Space'. The All Seeing I are/were Dean Honer (I Monster), Jason Buckle (Rubber Johnny, Relaxed Muscle) and DJ Parrot (Sweet Exorcist), this track was written by Jarvis Cocker and sung by housewives favourite, Phil Oakey. Phil opens the song by reading from a letter "Hello this is Phil talking..." about how life has moved on since he got back from space. Perhaps young Jarvis is writing about how life changed for him after he came back from having Worldwide success. hmmmm probably not. Anyway it sure is a swell song and it so deserved to get higher than No. 37 in the charts. By the way if you get the LP 'Pickled Eggs & Sherbert' then keep an ear cocked for the excellent 'Happy Birthday Nicola' also written by Cocker and sung by Babybird's Steven Jones and Sheffield legend Tony Christie. I've lost my copy (only had it on minidisc) so if anyone out there has this track then wing us one will'yer. ooh get him.

Visit - Sweet Exorcist

Ctrl C - Rod Is Gay
I know nothing about this record other than I once overheard a Fat Trucker say it was a mate of theirs when I was hanging around in the bushes of Fat Truckers Mansions masticating. I was hungry at the time. The b-side is a mucky version of Bills Bills Bills by Destiny's Child and the picture at the top of this post is from the 7". Cocks artists own.

The Wad - 15 Inches
This came out about 4 years ago on Earth Records which I think are based in Bristol. I've always thought The Wad were from Sheffield (maybe not??) anyway there's also a version rebuilt by Forgemasters (of Warp 001 fame) on the 7 Hills Clash 12" on Denk Records which I don't think is as good as the original. Ah well each to their own I suppose. 7 Hills Clash 12" does have an ace reworking of Obeah's Chickenfoot by the All Seeing which I was going to post but thought it might be a bit too much all seeing them again etc etc etc...

JP Buckle - Batty Rymer
Guess which band of DJs/producers this chap was once in who remade their UK smash hit (originally by Sonny and Cher) for American Mickey Mouse sensation. Yes them. On Britney's first album there is a swinging rework of 'The Beat Goes On' which has kept Buckle/Honer and Parrot in old synths and taxis ever since. This track is taken from a double LP on Rephlex that came out god knows when and is both good and bad but neither brilliant. What does this track and Gucci Soundsystem frontman Ben 'Batty' Rymer have in common? Yes they're both the same as Rod.

Visit - Rephlex
Visit - Relaxed Muscle

Hiem - Chelsea
You'll never guess what but I once saw the' All S****g I' live at Danny La Rue's music hall in the East End of London and singing/playing guitar that evening (along with Oakey) was Bozz lead singer with Heim. He was wearing a poncho at the time n'all. Heim also have a track on Ann Shenton's (Add N to X) The Electronic Bible CD which Simon mentions below (Buy it for it is good). I'm a little worn out now sportsfans so cheerio.

Sheffield Sex City (Part 2)

Willis - The Space Within (Fat Truckers Mix)
This was released as a one sided 7" last year that was limited to just 500 copies.
(good luck with finding a copy)
Sheffield's own Fat Truckers take the country bluesy song by Willis and just sledgehammer the bloody thing into submission...
And what a what a wonderful wonderful racket they produced.
The original version can be found on the Willis album Come Get Some, also released last year on 679 Recordings.
It's not a bad album, it has some really good songs on it and she has a great voice... I just feel it's a little too over produced for my taste.

If you're looking for a great album to buy though you really cant go wrong with The First Fat Truckers Album Is For Sale, this is the US release with the bonus version of Superbike.

Visit - Willis

The Human League - Dance Like A Star
Ahhh! The Mighty Mighty League...
I can't believe I haven't posted anything by them before...
This is taken from The Golden Hour Of The Future album that was compiled and released by Richard X in 2002 on his own Black Melody label.
The album ties up all the loose ends pre Virgin... including some recordings made as The Future before they changed their name.
This album might be a little hard to get hold of at a decent price but fear not as Richard has a stack hidden under his bed so visit his site and email him and ask nicely.

Pulp's Tour Truck.

"Cocker to-day is for all practical purposes a pet and a show dog"

Pulp - Dogs Are Everywhere
It's that man Jarvis Cocker again, this time with a pre-fame Pulp offering on 12" from 1986 on Fire Records.
This was their 4th single and my introduction to the joys of Pulp...
Although not as dramatic as later Pulp releases I think this was kind of the start of the delivery and sound of the Jarvis we know and love now.
It's a pretty funny song to be honest, makes me smile everytime I hear it anyway.
This track along with a couple of the b-sides is available on the Countdown 1992-1983 compilation.

Visit - Pulp

Have a good weekend everyone.
