Monkees Like Watermelon...

The Monkees - Circle Sky

This has to be one of the thrumiest songs of all time... and just when you think it can't get any thrumier... the bit after the middle eight just hits you...

Brilliant!

This is taken from one of The Monkees finest albums Head (the soundtrack to one of the most messed up films of the era!)

The album also features the wonderfully psychedelic Goffin & King song "Porpoise Song", along with another of The Monkees self penned greats "Can You Dig It".

Basically The Monkees never had any street cred at the time as they were a manufactured band that didn't write their own songs or play on the records.... but after the initial success they had they started writing and playing a lot more of their own stuff, like this tune written by Mike Nesmith in 1967.

And if anyone's heard some of the live recording they did from '67-'68 they made one hell of a racket sometimes.... rawer than some of the so called garage punk bands of the time, and it sounds like they had one hell of a laugh too.

Urusei Yatsura - Kewpies Like Watermelon

This slice of wonderful noisy Glaswegian band Urusei Yatsura is taken from the excellent We Are Urusei Yatsura LP and was also the lead track on the Stunray EP both released in 1996 on CHE Records.

Other great singles of note of theirs were "Phasers on Stun" and "Slain by Elf".

Sadly they aren't with us anymore, but the core of the band are now playing and starting to record as Projekt A-ko.
