Sly And The Family Stone - Underdog
This is the opening track from the criminally overlooked Whole New Thing Lp from 1967, I say criminally overlooked as even though it was their first album, absolutely nothing from it ever seems to turn up on any of the 1,268 compilation albums and best ofs that are out there,
and that's a shame as I think it's a fantastic album, every single song is an absolute essential, and would sit very easily next to anything else they recorded. It hasn't got the washed out druggy funkiness of their later stuff... But this album is sharp... Very sharp.
I also think it's one of the best debut album's of all time.
In my opinion Underdog has Greg Errico's best ever drumming on it, add that to all the Yeah Yeah's and Wooo's, funky ass bass playing and solid soul brass stabs and that makes this a killer tune.

Squarepusher - Love Will Tear Us Apart
I usually think most Joy Division cover versions are crap due to the fact that I love the originals so much.
There's been a few exceptions to that, Galaxie 500 - Ceremony, Low - Transmission, Codeine doing Atmosphere... and Squarepusher.
This version isn't to different from the original but adds a lovely kind of washed out feeling to it.
It's taken from the Covered Album released on Obsessive Recordings last year,
the album is a bit patchy but has a couple of gems on there, most notably Roots Manuva doing Yellow Submarine and The Slits with their brilliant version of Heard It Through The Grapevine that Loki posted over at An Idiot's Guide To Dreaming last week.
Can I also recommend Squarepusher's Ultravisitor Lp to you... It's very good....
