She looks OK to me

Sparks - Don't Leave Me Alone With Her

Ron and Russell Mael are truly unique. While most of the bands around in the Seventies are now parodies of themselves, churning out their 'Greatest Hits' and becoming their own cliched tribute act Sparks go and release 'Lil' Beethoven', perhaps their finest hour and an LP I would truly recommend to anyone.

'Don't Leave Me Alone With Her' is taken off their 1974 release 'Propaganda' and only Sparks would sing "A Hitler wearing heels, a soft Simon Legree. A Hun with honey skin, De Sade who makes good tea." We all know who Hitler is, Simon Legree is a fictional slave trader, a Hun is a Mongol barbarian and De Sade is the smokey voiced chanteuse who sang 'Smooth Operator'.

It's not a reference to Sade the artist. It's Marquis De Sade, an 18th century perverted aristrocat who amongst other things wrote a classic novel about S&M sex...

No really? you're having me on. I thought in the company of the other names Sparks mention Hitler, Legree and Atilla the Hun that it would have to be 80's soul singer Sade and not sadist, murderer and author of '120 Days in Sodom' Marquis de Sade. Well I never.

...a shame about the irony-impaired comment above.

This is the first time I've commented on a tunelog, inspired entirely by the brilliance of the Sade/de Sade "bon mot" above...

I've been loving the music--thanks! I'll be contributing to the tune-sphere soon.
