Half Man Half Biscuit - Joy Division Oven Gloves
Half Man Half Biscuit - Song To The Siren / Vatican Broadside
(Peel Session 03.08.2002)
I'm in a jovial mood today, so let's have us some joviality.
I used to love Half Man Half Biscuit back in the day, we drifted apart though about a decade or so back, but over the last couple of years we've started talking again, and now I'm as smitten as I used to be...
I'm not really sure why that happened, I guess I just stopped buying the albums, I mean how many albums do you really need that consist of great music and razor sharp lyrics full of wit and social comment in equal measures...
I guess the answer is all of them, as I've spent the last couple of years playing catch up, and loving every minute.
Joy Division Oven Gloves feature on their 2005 'Achtung Bongo' album, well worth any amount of whatever currency you use, and 'Song To The Siren' is the Tim Buckley song given the HMHB treatment, this was recorded for the late great Sir John Peel in 2002, and is one of the most normal things HMHB have recorded, until you get to the end and there's a message from the Pope...
Possibly about the funniest end to a song I've ever heard, especially considering the rest of the song... It shouldn't really work, a beautiful Tim Buckley song with the Pope slagging off Slipknot at the end...
Perfect.
I think only Half Man Half Biscuit can really get away with this...
Great stuff.
